Antistatic ABS

Overview

Plastics are good electrical insulating materials. Such electrical insulating properties generate static electricity, which may cause problems such antistatic electric shock, poor sound reproduction of records or tapes and explosions due to dust discharge and air mixtures. starex Antistatic ABS resins, additive type antistatic resins, have been developed in order to reduce the accumulation of static charges or remove the problems related to static discharge.

Features

1) Excellent Antistatic Effect

Due to a good antistatic property, pollutants, dust and mites should not be found on products.
2) Rapid Antistatic Effect

The antistatic effect begins immediatelyafter molding and is maintained for a long period.
3) Stability of Physical Properties

The uses of all grades arewide and the changes in physical properties are small.
4) Excellent Secondary Processability

The secondary process can be used onboth antistatic grades and general ABS grades.
5) Uniform Quality

Qualities such as physical properties andcolor are controlled by on-line automatic processes.
¡Ø Antistatic Property

    1. Antistatic Property
Additive type antistatic agents include both hydrophilic and hydrophobic groups. Hydrophilic groups bind with water at the product's surface to produce its antistatic performance whereas hydrophobic ones make themselves compatible with the resins.
    2. Characterization of Antistatic Properties
      - Surface resistivity:measurement of the static discharge phenomenon.
      - Half-life period: the time for the sample to lose half of its original charge.
      - Dart chambertest: measurement of the attract ability of absorbent cotton combustibles on plastic.
    3. Durability
The antistatic effect functions when antistatic agents are present on the product's surface. The effect, therefore, starts immediately after molding and is maintained for a long period until the agents are consumed. In addition, although the effect can be temporarily lost by friction, it will be gradually restored by the migration of antistatic agents from the inner part to the surface.
    4. Relationship between the Antistatic Effect and Humidity
Since typical measuring conditions are at 25~75¡É and 40% relative humidity, caution should be used with temperature and humidity while measuring the antistatic effect. The antistatic effect increases with relative humidity.
Properties

1) Antistatic Property

In general, antistatic plastics have asurface resistivity of 109-1014 and a static discharge half-life of not more than 60 seconds. starex antistatic ABS series resins have a surface resistivity of 1012 and do not attract dust particles in normal conditions.
2) Mechanical

By adding an antistatic agent to general ABS grade, starex antistatic ABS resin's better flow characteristics and reduced deterioration of mechanical properties compared with general ABS can be noticed.
3) Thermal

The heat resistance of antistatic ABS series is 2-3% lower than general ones due to the heat stability of antistatic agents. However, even though this may cause few problems, care should be taken when thermal stability is critical.
