ASA
1. The Justification of Using ASA Resins
ABS (Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-styrene) resins has outstanding properties such as excellent processability, chemical resistance, and impact resistance. It is widely applied to a variety of electronic appliances and OA machines. Because it discolors and deteriorates easily when exposed to oxygen, ozone, or ultraviolet rays, ABS resins have some limitations in its applications to outdoor devices and electronic appliances requiring weather resistance. To solve these problems, light stabilizers have been added or paints with excellent weather resistance had been coated onto the surface of molds. Unfortunately, these additional processing solutions brought about increase in product costs. Also, the problem of long run weather resistance still needed to be addressed. To satisfy this need, weather resistance ASA, ACS, and AES resins came to be developed.
Our starex weather resistance ASA (Acrylic Styrene Acrylonitrile) resin was developed with our own technology. It has the same level of physical properties as general ABS resins but with far superior weather resistance characteristic. It also retains stable physical properties for a long time, so that it can be applied as outdoor external materials.
1. Weather resistance
Thanks to its structural characteristics, starex ASA grade has superior long-term weather resistance to that of general ABS resins. When exposed to outdoor environments for a long time, changes in its physical properties and the surfaces of molds are outstandingly less than general ABS resins so that it can be utilized to exterior materials and outdoor molds.
2. Good surface Quality
starex ASA grade improved the weak tinting strength of ASA resins to a great extent to have the same level of tinting strength as general ABS. Compared to existing ASA grades, starex ASA grade can be applied to products requiring good surface qualities and high color quality.
3. Variety
starex ASA has various specialty grades such as general ASA, Sheet ASA, heat resistance ASA, and low gloss and can offer a wide range of applications.
4. Chemical resistance
ASA resins have superior chemical resistance as well as weather resistance compared to other plastic resins, and starex ASA grade retains such good properties for longer period.
2. Understanding of ASA
ABS resins, composed of butadiene, styrene monomer, and acrylonitrile, is easy to process and has excellent impact resistance and mechanical strength. It is widely used as electrical and electronic housings and automotive interior and exterior materials. However, ABS resins is apt to discolor and deteriorate when it is exposed to oxygen, ozone, and light because the dissociation energy of double bond alpha-hydrogen of poly-butadiene, which is an impact reinforcing agent, is 39kcal/mol and can be easily dissociated by the low energy light of wavelengths shorter than 700nm.
Unlike ABS resins, ASA resins uses acrylic rubber without double bonds instead of butadiene, whose hydrogen dissociation energy is 90kcal/mol and is dissociated by the high energy light of wavelengths shorter than 300nm, which do not exist in sun rays. This means that ASA resins have such a molecular structure which cannot be easily deteriorated by weather. Improved for weather resistance, ASA exhibits less changes in the surface of molds and its properties than ABS resins in its long term outdoor applications. Thanks to these characteristics, ASA resins are widely applied to the parts that are exposed to outdoor environments.
3. The Application of ASA Resins
ASA resin has outstanding weather resistance and it is applied to a wide range of fields such as automobiles, ships, leisure equipments, construction materials, and gardening tools. Unlike ABS resins, products made of ASA can be used without extra coatings or paintings.
4. Characteristics
1 Various grades
starex ASA grade consists of various grades such as general, high rigidity, sheet, heat resistance, and low gloss to meet the needs of customers. It also varies in its weather resistance and other properties required from ASA resins, which you can check out in Grade Network made systematically to maximize the satisfaction of customers.
2 Excellent processability
starex ASA grade has excellent processability and it generates a low rate of deformations in injection molding to have high productivity.
3 Excellent quality stability
starex ASA grade is manufactured with automatic control technology and it maintains stable quality in Lot colors, contaminants, and black spots.
4 Excellent tinting strength
ASA resins has inferior color ability to ABS resins, which results from the structural differences of rubbers used in them. ASA resins needs much more amount of colorants than ABS resins in expressing the same colors, which causes deteriorations in its physical properties and weather resistance. To solve these problems, starex ASA grade improved inferior tinting strength to a great extent with our own technology to minimize the side effects resulting from excessive use of colorants and to have good surface quality and high color quality.
